Brooklyn Outdoor Service GuideS
Brooklyn Outdoor Service Guides is an inclusive organization dedicated to providing a “Back to Basics” program to Brooklyn youth and their families. We welcome everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, class, ability, religion (or no religion), or other differentiating factors. We are part of the Outdoor Service Guides (OSG), a national volunteer-run organization. Brooklyn Outdoor Service Guides has five age-based levels of participation (Chipmunks, Otters, Timberwolves, Pathfinders and Rovers), all of which are co-ed and include participants and leaders of all genders.
Brooklyn Outdoor Service Guides (and their families) participate in camping trips, nature and culture outings, service projects, fundraising and regular meetings. The curriculum for all Scouts includes environmental conservation, wildlife recognition, woodcraft, orienteering, first aid/safety and camp skills.
what is “back to basics”?
“Back-to-Basics” refers to a focus on a love of nature, and a drive to help others. These are the foundations of Brooklyn Outdoor Service Guides where we seek to challenge our participants in woodcraft and nature skills through our outdoors focus. We also engage in service projects, from trash pickup to food drives.
Our “back to basics” focus also encourages our guides to bond via small groups of 6 or less (Otter Dens, Timberwolf Sixes, Pathfinder Patrols). By working in small teams of their peers, Scouts learn independence, resilience and problem solving as a group.
PARENT/GUARDIAN VOLUNTEERING AND PARTICIPATION
The regular troop activities, organization of camping trips, community outreach and fundraisers depend on parent and guardian involvement. By being 100% volunteer, we are able to keep our programs available to all income levels. Brooklyn Outdoor Service Guides is a Family oriented activity, an opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children, helping their community and learning about the outdoors. No previous knowledge necessary!
We welcome all skills and talents besides our regular roles in accounting, fundraising, admin, legal, technology and leadership roles. For more information, contact your Troop or Section leader.
Our Group Structure
We are an entirely volunteer-based organization and rely on the contributions of all our families. Many will choose to serve as uniformed leaders (who are also Rovers), others in an administrative capacity.
